Why call it Sunday “SCHOOL” …

The ‘Sunday school’ movement began in Britain in the late 18th century. The Industrial Revolution had resulted in many children spending all week long working in factories. Sunday schools were originally literally schools: they were places were poor children could learn to read.  Christian philanthropists wanted to free these children from a life of illiteracy, so  religious education was, of course, always also a core component. The Bible was the textbook used for learning to read. Likewise, many children learned to write by copying out passages from the scriptures. A basic catechism was also taught, as were spiritual practices such as prayer and hymn-singing.

… it’s more than meets the eye

Sunday School is obviously no longer an institution for instruction in literacy. We don’t sit at desks.  We don’t practice spelling.  Children already attend school 5 days a week.  They don’t need another day of ‘school’.  We do learn A LOT though!  Each week young people age 4 and up are invited to gather during the worship service to celebrate growing with God in fun and creative ways.  We develop community and caring through a variety of interactive activities: games, art, music, science and drama. We even share our lessons and practice our leadership skills by leading the worship service several times a year!

So for now – Sunday School shall be referred to as

The Children’s Gathering!

Interactive activities will be at the very core of our Sunday morning fun and learning.  It’s a time for our young people to celebrate and explore their growing relationship with God ♥ while learning teamwork and building community.

Come to the morning worship service at 10 and from there, Pastor Irv will announce the dismissal of young people to the gathering.  We’ll head upstairs to our own worship space where the adventures begin.
